A Long History of Hospitality

The History of this Magnificent Heritage Property dates back to 1893. The home was built by a local carpenter, Reuben A. Conrad, as a home for his new bride.

In 1913 the home was purchased by blacksmith George W. Hamm and his wife Sophia from the Conrad's heirs. When Sophia and George divorced in 1924, Sophia was left to take care of the home by herself. To make ends meet, she opened her home to paying guests. Sophia aptly named it “The Hillside Hotel”. Ever since that time, the Inn has been welcoming guests making it the OLDEST Inn in Lunenburg to this day.

As it was adjacent to the new train station which opened in 1923, many of the first guests arrived by train. While the tracks are now gone and the station is now a historic building, the tracks now make up the “bay to bay” trail where runners, cyclists, and dog owner enjoys this wonderous trail and it expands from The Lunenburg Inn all the way to Mahone Bay.

During prohibition in the 1930s, Lunenburg was a popular destination so much that Joseph Kennedy, father of US President John F. Kennedy, was a frequent guest at The Hillside Hotel.

In 1987 the building was rescued from a period of disrepair, restored to the condition befitting a registered heritage property, and reopened as The Lunenburg Inn.

In 2022 it was again purchased and has undergone some extensive renovations to get ready for our upcoming 100th Birthday.
